Do you have any modification/tune installed?
Is the car mileage < 80,000 km ?
Have you ever filled up less than 91 octane gasoline?
If your answer is no to all of the questions above, 99% the cause of that engine light is a bad DMTL pump (very common on bimmers).
Yes, it will cost you $129 to replace it from the dealers.
I just had mine replaced in April 2012.
