Can't answer your rigidity question? To my knowledge, all here that have removed tanks have kept black plate in place. Not putting black plate back just to save weight?
Never mind the rigidity, don't you think weight of cargo and/or luggage would want to push the aluminum shield down into exhaust? My opinion but think your asking for trouble if leave plate out.
