It is correct, yet often not enforced by some specialties. They get around it because they "average" out the hours over say a month or 6 month period. As a resident, you can anonymously report any violation in duty hours but most do not for fear of repercussions. Most "ancient" physicians see this as a right of passage into "their" specialty. Though horrible at the time, in hindsight it wasn't that bad, and life now couldn't be any better.

Free food sounds great until you try it!!
