Just look inside the wheel and look at how thick the pad is
As a reference, use a flash light to look inside the front and rear wheels of your current car. You should notice that the front pads are more worn than the rear. You will get a reference for pad thickness based on your mileage. Make a mental note and use it when you look at the pads on the cars. If the pads are nice and thick, you know that they've probably been changed recently.
