I think it's a neat idea but (my friend) decided to try the easy route first. He just ordered a few 2 1/4" mandrel bends and a pair of 2 1/4" exhaust cutouts.

He is going to cut the stock exhaust right before the pup cats, go straight back with new piping (ditch the exhaust plate), then after the rear axle go in to dual 2 1/4" cutouts (they will both open towards the center of the car, in-between the stock mufflers), and finally to the factory mufflers. He will also plug the vacuum line going to butterfly valve in the driver side tip so both sides are always open.

With the cutouts open it should flow OK, and there might even be an improvement with the cutouts closed due to the pup cat/resonator/crush bend elimination.
