Had the surgery and service,
New ecu, latest software version 28, new carbon fibre cam cover (£750 because the perished breather pipe is part of that bigger assembly, lucky within warranty), new spark plugs and and inspection service (no oil change).
Hesitation now gone, quicker on pick up from lower revs this could be down to fresh plugs.
Haven't driven it enthusiastically yet but possibly tomorrow, but I'm away for a couple of weeks so a full report on overall improvement will be delayed.
At least Peterborough BMW are still showing dedication to fixing the very small problems.

ps rear Michelin 255/35 cost me £235 all in, if anyone was interested.
