Hmm, but the last half of the car (or even more) will surely be dry by the time you get to claying it, especially on a new car. And then one runs the risk of water spots if the water isn't soft.

If you're in the shade it shouldn't dry, especially if you keep it wet. I do do this as a time saving step, so if you want to dry go for it.
