Sounds like a nightmare:

Despite a move towards longer service intervals throughout the industry many cars need only annual checks - Mazda is telling owners to check the vehicle's engine oil every 1000 kilometres or every month.

It warns that oil levels in the engine can naturally rise and that "if it approaches or exceeds the "X" (the highest mark on the dipstick), the oil needs to be replaced. Please take your Mazda to your nearest Mazda dealer. Failing to do so can result in damage to your engine."

While the owner's manual says increasing oil levels are common, Mazda describes the problem as "highly unlikely" on its Facebook page.

But it has sent some owners for repeated visits for premature engine oil and oil filter changes, which have been carried out under warranty.

However Mazda is adament it is taking concerns - which only affect diesel CX-5s, not the petrol versions - seriously.

"Rising oil levels are something which can be attributed to normal operation of a modern diesel engine. There can be a slight dilution of oil levels and that's completely normal", Mazda Australia public relations manager Steve Maciver says.
