Yeah this possibly could be a situation where detrimental reliance occurred. Was the action of the OP (plane tickets) of a definite and substantial nature? Can injustice be avoided only by the enforcement of the promise to sell the OP the car?
The situation would've been messier had OP sold his current car, relying on the seller's promise to sell to the OP the new car, etc.
