The MAF is position in between the engine and the charcoal filter. With or with out the charcoal filter the gases from the engine would still pass through the MAF.
I recently did this mod, and like other posted results the car revs smoother and feels as if there is more power above the 2000rpm band. Gas milage showed no change.
