Wider wheels in the back give the car a more aggressive stance and keeps the rear wheels from looking too "tucked" under the fender. Honestly I think that 18x8 is a little thin for a 3 series, I would go at least 18x8.5. Running different sizes front and back on an xDrive is fine as long as the rolling diameter difference of the front and rear tires is less than 1%.
