As you can see from the pic above, the headers (metal pins) that connect the slip ring's cables to the rest of the car's wiring are pointed down - they are perpendicular to the rest of the slip ring. So the cables themselves have to be rotated 90 degrees so that they can be wound around the middle of the slip ring - see the pic below. BMW does this simply by folding the well-named flat flexible cable and jamming it into that little corner! Then the cable feeds through a tiny slot where it enters the coil of the slip ring.

When the cables are folded they press up a bit because they want to continue to go up instead of being folded. So BMW put a little plastic arm across them to hold them down.
