The t-stat is part of the emissions system (to control cold-start emissions) and will throw a SES OBDII trouble code light if it is defective. The water pump will throw codes related to pump speed deviation, which don't illuminate any lights in the gauge cluster, so those two items can be found to be defective by scanning the car.

If the system is venting properly by using the water pump, then the pump is good. Maybe the radiator is clogged.
