At Nick's suggestion, I hooked up my NBT to the car instead of the viewtool usb thing. NBT powers up, same as before, but the front panel lights work, eject works, and i can reinsert the cd it came with (Guns 'n Roses - Use Your Illusion).
Nick also suggested testing my car's iphone, so i installed the connected drive app, added the NBT's vin, then plugged it in. it got an error reading the VIN from the NBT directly, but when I started up Pandora, it transferred control to the NBT (which I can't see, because no display cable).
Seems like my NBT is good! Now back to the waiting-for-a-cable game...
