Generally speaking warranty costs more than an average amount spent for repairs. This is how companies that sell warranty make money. I personally would invest some time to seek out small shops that specialize in BMWs and have them at least look at the car before you buy. If they give the green light and you like them you can use them for all future repairs outside of warranty and I bet you overall you'll spent less. Of course the extreme cases are when people loose their transmission and something else that is very costly in which case you will be glad you have it. It's a lot like gambling... your question is a lot like asking, should you go to a casino tonight and bet on red? The answer is maybe, but remember in the long run the house (a.k.a seller of warranty) always wins.
