im in the same situ, but i think it has somthing to do with the multifunction buttons, there different for cars without baddle shifters, and if you do the direct connection via the spare holes you essentially by by-passing the cars system that tells the modules the change in d mode.

i red the advert on the burgertuning site and it says.

"PLEASE READ BEFORE ORDERING: We do not sell any OEM parts. In addition to the harness, install guide, and tech support we provide you with the OEM BMW part numbers required to complete the retrofit. After receiving our harness you will also need to separately purchase a paddle shift steering wheel (one with cutouts for paddles), the paddle shifters, and the exact steering wheel control module (buttons on the wheel) we list in the install guide."
