The same thing happened to me. My car had ~38k miles on it. I noticed a small puddle after it sat for a week while I was out of town.
Our trans fluid looks just like oil. Not red tinted like the old days!
It is disappointing that there is no way for the owner to check trans fluid level. BMW claims "sealed for life" but they seem to be having a bit of trouble with the seal...
