Any other accessories out? Perhaps it's the relay that turns accessories like this on when the car is turned on.
N55: that's BS they said you "overloaded the socket holder". Unless they meant you physically bent it up or something, if it was overloaded the fuse would've blown. I accidently put a defective plug into mine and totally shorted it out, and all that happened was a blown fuse.
Short of physical distortion or broken wires, there's really nothing that can happen to a socket electrically.
