Nearly all the hot hatch backs top out mid 140s early 150mph even if they are 200bhp or 240bhp with far more torque.

Aerodynamics come into it a lot at that stage and hot hatchbacks are not aerodynamic.

Torque gives you a sensation of changing speed quicker than you really are. Type Rs are the opposite where lack of torque removes the sensation.
