It's caused by a combination of the super-low first gear and the grabby computer "assisted" brakes. Prove it by shifting into neutral before stopping (like a manual) - SMOOTH! I use manual mode in stop and go traffic to keep the auto from shifting below second, this does help but still not a cure.
I personally find this to be the MAJOR FLAW in automatic cars, and I'm surprised BMW didn't catch this at the factory OR come up with new software to alleviate this problem!
