45mpg out of a 335d? On what planet is THAT!? God only knows how you can get 40mpg on anything other than long motorway drives.

Mines avergaed 33.2 over the last few thousand miles, which is a 20 mile commute into cambridge, and then town work. Since its a slushbox, town driving kills the economy, a 330d manual is significantly better on fuel if you do any stop-start whatsoever.

I was skeptical of the autobox, I'm a manual anorak, but the torque on them is enormous, they pull from tickover and they just pile on speed regardless of gear, shifting almost becomes a moot point. The only real issue with a slushbox over a manual is if you can't pre-select the gears when you exit corners, which the paddles allow you to do, so you don't get the gearbox shuffling about deciding what gear it wants unless you're feeling lazy.

428lb/ft sort of makes the gearbox a bit redundant, because any gear, any speed, the thrust on offer is epic, and very few things on the road can keep tabs on them.
