Steering gear? If you are talking about the paddle shifters, I use both the gear selector and the paddle shifters.
I also feel confident with my hand positioning. My arms are short, so I can't grip the wheel at 10/2 and turn fully... I would understeer. The person I was driving with is probably like a step or two below a very advanced track driver, and he lives up in the canyons, so he's driven those roads (hard) every day since he turned 16. His only comments to me were that I should turn into a corner just a bit slower and in a gear lower, so that I could accelerate out quicker. I kept myself in higher gears to avoid really heating up the oil too much.
