throttle bodies open and close when u step on the gas or let off. they let the air into the engine for the intake valves to let into the combustion chamber aka cylinder. in the older e30 M3 it is easy to see them there are 4 throttle bodies each for a cylinder. plus they have tubes going to them from the intake. google search a pic of it. i can't post one that will fit
