The symptoms you first described, with the slow acceleration to 3000 RPM and then strong afterwards point to an actuator issue (actuator, converter, or vacuum tubes). I wonder if the actuator issue could confuse the DDE and cause strange shifting. Do you have a code scanner you can use? You might have a code that isnt throwing a light.
