I have been using Shell Rotella T6 5W-40 for the last 60k Kms on my 08 323 , have used it on all my previous e36 and e46 bmws as well as on my gsxr 1000 for a combine mileage of over 200k kms. Also had it on my fd3s rx7 for around 40k kms...
The oil is great, cheap, available and holds up to abuse
you can not go wrong with what bmw recommends nor can you go wrong with shell t6,
change it regularly, every 10-12k kms and you will be fine
