I am not sure where you are getting this, but I have heard that the e90 is selling extremely well - in fact in Canada BMW has lowered the lease residuals and upped the finance rate.
I think that there was always thought by BMW AG to differentiante the coupe from the sedan - hence at one point the thought given to different designations altogether. I think that this is why the look of the two are and will be diffenrent in a way.
