Why would BMW bother coming up with a new part number if they're identical?

They must be pretty close in how they work though since they say in their TSB that if you already have the 933 pump, they don't need to update you to the new 446 one.

The new part number might very well mean the same part but in a different state, i.e. refurbished/used or perhaps from a different producer etc etc. All I care is that my car is in good order, I could care less if they handout refurb stuff as long as it is free.
