I agree with your reasoning for oil choice, but am curious about your statement of less wear. Is that based on the fact that a thinner oil will get up into the head and cyl. faster on start up? If so, wouldn't the 0-40 do a better job as it has a lower cold viscosity?
the other mobil1 oil mentioned in the manual is 5w-40, which is not even available in the US, which further leads me to believe there is misinformation in the manual.

correct, but the US does not get this version. the only castrol oil sold in the US that is LL-01 approved is castrol syntec 0w30, which is also known as german castrol (or GC for short) since it's made in germany.
