I looked under the hood and on the side of the engine near the exhaust there is a lot of this sooty residue that somewhat wipes off and feels gritty and slightly oily. I've researched forums and it seems this is somewhat normal. I've never noticed this before and everything was clean when I got the car. It's almost like the sooty residue has been sprayed on. I found a post on a mini forum where a guy had to have his turbo replaced including seals by the cat converter.
