Just to answer my own question I conducted a little test.
Sony -r 4x burn vs verbatim +r 4x burn, both using same burner and burning software.
Maybe it's in my head but +r is definitely faster for me (I tested with stopwatch).
Again may not be same for you - or maybe I'm biased because I already had preconceptions before this test.
