the trans does store information but not for that long and it's always updated...so people complaining of poor transmission performance (lasting days or weeks etc) suddenly being corrected after this "reset" are probably just feeling placebo... or some other parameter changed that had nothing to do with the reset.
note: It's still a computer though, so there's always the chance that something gets messed up and "freezes" in one configuration which can be fixed by a reset (just like your PC)...but I'd guess this is exceedingly rare (given the fixed nature of the trans software...it's not as though it can pick up a virus) and probably doesn't explain most people's trans problems.
