The confusion is because there are two charcoal filters. One charcoal filter for the cabin, this is replaceable, which is separte from the engine air filter. The second is behind the replaceable engine air filter in the factory intake box, this filter I believe was intended to be permanent. However, people have removed this charcoal engine air filter. Check DIY for details. This filter appears quite restrictive. I have removed it, but ended up going with a Simota in the end.
