IIRC, the E9X is rated to tow something like a 3300lb braked trailer in Germany. The stability control system even has a "trailer mode" that is activated when the factory tow light harness is plugged in. It acts to dynamically reduce trailer sway.

I don't have a definitive answer to the OPs question, I actually have a BMW OEM hitch, but it is still at the buddy who brought it over for me's place ~1000 miles from me. I don't *think* that you have to drill any holes, I do know you have to remove and replace the bumper structural members.
