If the vibrations went away, that would be unrelated to the center bore, meaning that the initial problem was not caused by the wheel being off center.

A lot of things can cause vibrations or affect tire wear. Just an example, my tires were balanced just fine on a previous set, but my axle was going bad, and it caused some vibrations. After a while of troubleshooting, I figured out it was the axle, but the vibrations actually caused my tire to become egg-shaped. When we tried to rebalance it, that tire had 165 pounds of road force, basically rendering it unusable.
