Maybe cut it completely off the muffler, shorten it from the back-side non-chromed pipe and then weld it back on. Is that what the shop did on yours OP? Just ran down and looked at my exhaust, diffnitely the simplest and probably cleanest way to do it.

my exhaust tips got slight bent front the outside by a minor accident, so the dealer cut the exhaust tips from the outside by almost an inch, the end result is nice, less ricer now..
