My 14 year old E36 survived for 200K+ miles on the original clutch too. I lived in DC (inside the city limits), so the majority of miles on it were city miles.

There are, in my mind only three possible causes to your clutches early demise:
  • Poor clutch workmanship/materials in its manufacture
  • The manner in which it's been operated/maintained
  • Aliens
All the best and good luck; I hope the repair isn't too expensive. I'd be curious to know what you find once you've had the matter resolved. I too have a 6MT.
