Exactly my problem, and exactly my approach. I've got all the parts and fluid just haven't gotten around to it yet.
My trans has been slipping for a while now but hasn't got any worse.
Has your fluid level ever got low in the past?
If the clutches are worn there should be gunk at the bottom of the pan.
