NC is not a no fault state (i don't think). if you involve your carrier, which it looks like you have (which was not necessary), go get your car fixed and pay your deductible and quit crying. your insurance company WILL subrogate, and they will win. you will most likely get your deductible back.

I would say that with most people, insurance is one of those things they pay because they have to and don't think about it until they need to. If you have never had to use it before, obviously you wouldn't know all the in's and out's like you do (especially being in the business).
