If you are going down that route it will probably be worth getting a haynes manual. They list everthing that should be done at various intervals in the front of the book.

However won't this approach affect the resale value especially on a BMW? I used to service my old shitter cars but had planned an using an indy for the regular service on the BMW and then do as much as I can in terms of other maintenance and fixing myself...

With regards to parts - I would think any decent autofactors would be able to suppy the correct filters etc and be cheaper than buying from BMW...
