That's what the 50mm is for! (I know its tough to switch lenses on the fly) You should be able to get away with the 16-35L at the 35mm end, but still watch out for distortion. On a 20D, the crop might take care of the edge distortion. I usually never shoot people with my 16-35L on the 5D2, the distortion is too crazy.

You should try and commit yourself to the 50 for portraits. Try it for your next dinner party or get together. Its great for sniping candids too.
