But what you want to look at how much you can buy the car for and how much you expect them to depreciate.

Here's a hypothetical scenario.
Car1 is $30k, you sell it in 3 years for $20k
Car2 is $35k, you sell it in 3 years for $22k

As you can see, Car2 in this case has a higher absolute resale value, but you technically saved more money with Car1.
