I don't have an N52, but according to that thread when you sit the car for long enough, much of the oil has drained away from the cylinder head so there's a noticeable sound. Makes sense since you've been away for a month. After a long long drive, the oil circulates back to the top and the ticking is reduced.

Tell the wife to drive the car for a long distance, and see if ticking still persists. Stay safe in Afghan.
