As other people have said, drifting was may more popular around 04-06 than it is now. It's catching on more on the grassroots level, and there's still professional drifting, but it's not like it used to be.

Drifting takes a great deal of skill, I'd dare say as much as a NASCAR driver, it's just a different type of driving.

Drifting is way more enjoyable to watch live in person in my opinion than say F1 or many other types of racing. At any road course you can't see the entire track, so in order to see all the action you have to watch the TV.. Drifting is done in a small arena so it's easy to see everything from the stands.
