From this conversation I'm guessing it's from the wheels since it sounds like the suspension is the same regarding control arm lengths and such.
I this specific M3 (E92), the widened track in the front comes from the wheel offsets and widths.

The rear, I think is ever so slightly wider. Its not that important.
