The ones from Apple are truly unlocked. The ones from Carphone Warehouse are sim-free. They play on the public's general ignorance or the ambiguity between the terms. Stick an O2/Voda/Orange/whatever SIM into an iPhone from Carphone Warehouse and it will remain O2/Voda/Orange/whatever.
So £499 for an unlocked handset from Apple. Or £499 for a locked handset from Carphone Warehouse. I know which I'd choose.
