When I went back into the garage at the dealer while they were reprogramming my car after putting new fuel injectors in, I saw they had something like that with wires running to the terminal under the hood.. The car was on with the iDrive screen on for a long time (over 8 hours).. Is there something other than a battery tender for that then?

Just doesn't seem smart to leave the car on battery power for quite a while coding it and any way to avoid running down the battery would be a good idea. Running the engine (As mentioned earlier) can't be very good for voltage stabilization...
