Two, I don't know if I want to buy a crappy will probably need some work high mileage Cherokee. My commute to work is very, very short at .6 miles... but the days I need to go to the grocery store / run errands, visit mom are the days I'm worried about.

You don't need xi. All Volvos were rwd and Michigan is a joke compared to Sweden. BMW has 50/50 weight balance. If you put winter tires on you will be golden. Be smart and modulate your throttle on slippery roads, take it easy. Tires make all the difference. I have rwd also and Blizaak LM-25 rft in Philly. Car is beast on snowy roads. Just my 2c...
