Well, I think people assume that if you have something that's a "status" brand that you're like that. My last real car before getting a job with a company car was a Porsche 944; I think that that actually hurt my ability to meet and chat with new people if they saw the car, they thought I was "aspiring to a real Porsche" or something. But if I'd had an Accord or something they would have thought I was just a normal guy or whatever.
The funny thing is I finally broke down and bought my 335 because it was so painful driving nothing but company cars (2x Impalas, then a Fusion) and I'm not getting that same reaction for some reason. The 335 is a better car in just about every way except the 944 is much better at causing pain to rear seat passengers and is possibly a little more nimble, the 335 cost 4x as much (for me to buy at least) and is in much better shape cosmetically, but for some reason my friends are all just happy that I got something I like and think it's a great looking car. Do Porsche owners really have that much worse a rep among the GP than BMW owners?
NB: I'm not of the "status" that I can afford either a new Porsche or a new BMW.
