Speaking from first-hand experience -

I had my 06 E90 (pre-CA) fob replaced due to the roundel coming off (back when BMW was a bit nicer about that).

What I remember very specifically is that the car itself paired with the fob. That is, the fob was "blank" electronically from the factory. All they did was hand the fob to me, I placed it into the slot and then I could see interesting things happening on the radio display (don't have iDrive) as the new key was married to the car. I would gather that once the key was married, there's no going back.

I suspect the metal part was custom. If I remember right, the key came from Germany through NJ.
