Agree with Palmnuts about rain repellents. It's a nice novelty on the motorway not having to use your wipers, even in the heaviest rain. However, at low speeds the wipers are of course still necessary and I find the smearing unbearable. At night time, it is simply dangerous IMO. On the side and rear windows they are fine. Even help repel dew and mild frost formation.

If using a clay bar on the windscreen, do avoid using the spray lubes or quick detailers that are often recommended for clay bars. They contain silicone polymers and can cause smearing by the wipers. Auto Glym Fast Glass works as a decent lubricant (and is silicone free) or use a mild concentration of car shampoo with water. Alternatively, there are some brands of clay bar that can be used with just water.
